Gum Disease (also called Periodontal Disease) is an Inflammatory Disease that attacks the gums, bones and other supporting structures of the teeth.
Periodontal Disease is the most common cause of tooth loss in adults. It is also the most common infectious disease in the world.
The major cause of Periodontal Disease is plaque; however, it may also be influenced by your lifestyle and general health. Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on teeth. These bacteria create toxins, which if not removed can damage the gums.
Gum Disease can be broken down into stages. The initial stage is called Gingivitis, during which the gums become red, swollen and bleed easily. At this stage, the disease is still reversible and can usually be eliminated by daily brushing and flossing. However, because Gum Disease is usually painless many people are unaware they have it. In its more advanced stages, Gum Disease is referred to as Periodontitis. During this stage the gums and bone that support teeth can become seriously damaged. Teeth may start to become loose, fall out or need to be removed by a Dentist.
